Who Are We?
The ACTS ministry matches donations, e.g. acceptable furniture and electronic appliances, with church members/families that are in need of them. We pick-up and drop-off donated items, generally servicing all New York City boroughs but predominantly Brooklyn.
Serve In This Ministry
Eligibility to Serve in the Acts Ministry:
In order to serve in this ministry, you must be a member of the Brooklyn Tabernacle or in the process of becoming a member. All ministry members are required to complete a release of liability form and attend bi-monthly meetings and fellowships. You must be committed to serving at least 5 to 10 hours (depending on your team) per mission week in the ACTS ministry.
Activities and Functions:
The teams along with their activities and functions are as follows:
Take phone, email and web messages (donations and requests) to match donations with recipients, update database, schedule pick-ups/deliveries, and prepare documents for field leaders. They facilitate communications with teams, donors and recipients until the mission is accomplished.
Pick up and deliver household furnishings. Typically, Saturday moves begin at 8 am at 17 Smith Street. After prayer and mission review, workers carry out missions together by car and truck, and return to 180 Livingston Street to be dismissed between noon and 1 pm. If a member has a schedule conflict, a swap arrangement should be made and early notifications should be given to team leaders (7 days in advance) with the name of a worker who will take their place.
All workers (Coordinators and Field Workers) are required to be available to conduct visits to donor/recipient homes, at least once during their week of service. In pairs, visits are conducted to the home of both donors and recipients to assess the items intended for donation (e.g. taking pictures and measurements, etc), housing situation (e.g. number of staircases, size of hallway and elevators), parking and building specifics (e.g. where to enter and exit, building permit or security clearance requirements) and report all the requested information to the coordinators.
Frequency of Service
Field workers are scheduled for one Saturday morning per month for pickups and deliveries. Coordinators serve one week out of every month for one or more hours per day as needed, usually in the evenings. Coordination is done remotely from home. Additionally, all workers help with logistics visits during their scheduled mission week.
Length of Commitment
A one-year commitment to the ministry is required.
The ACTS volunteers must serve joyfully with others, be able to follow instructions/directions from leadership, and in a spirit of brotherly love communicate with co-laborers and the public. The field workers must be able to help lift weighty furniture. The coordinators must have working knowledge of Microsoft Word and access to home internet, phone and computer equipment.
