Becoming Healthier in 2019 – Part 1

“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation...” (1 Peter 2:2 NIV)

All the diet and exercise magazines are out, and folks are making resolutions to get physically healthier in the new year.  The question is, what are they going to actually do about it?  Suppose someone said, “Oh, I don’t want to do anything.  Just give me a pill, and that should take care of it.”  We could be sure that by the end of 2019, that person would have made no progress at all.

That’s an extreme example, but it’s amazing how often we think that something will change, or that there will be a different result, when nothing has been done differently.

The person who wants to get physically healthier needs to exercise and eat the right food.  Likewise, the Christian who wants to grow spiritually healthier this year has to exercise and eat the right food.  What does this entail?

The Bible itself provides guidance for us when it tells us to “crave [the] pure spiritual milk” of the word.  What for?  “[S]o that by it you may grow up in your salvation”!  Let’s make this a year when we ask the Holy Spirit not only to give us a craving for God’s Word, but to make it real to our hearts as well, so that we can mature in our faith, "now that [we] have tasted that the Lord is good."
