A Prayer for the Coming Year – Part 2

Tuesday, January 1, 2019

“Turn us again to yourself, O God of Heaven’s Armies.  Make your face shine down upon us.  Only then will we be saved.” (Psalm 80:7 NLT)

God’s people were in trouble, and the Psalmist Asaph knew it.  He realized that they were like sheep who had wandered, and that only the Lord could bring them back. So Asaph lifted his heart and prayed, “O Shepherd of Israel… rescue us!  Turn us again to yourself!”  That’s a good prayer to remember for those difficult moments we all face in our lives, isn’t it?  But it doesn’t end there.

The Psalmist continued to pray, as he cried out, “Make your face shine down upon us!”  That comes from the blessing of Aaron the priest, which is found in the Old Testament book of Numbers.  God’s face shining down on the people meant light and blessing.  It meant the shalom of God, which is peace and freedom from agitation.  “Only then,” said Asaph, “will we be saved.”

When God’s face shines upon you, it doesn’t matter what anyone says or does. You don’t need to look at a horoscope or consult a psychic.  When you are blessed by God, you are blessed by God!

Let the prayer of the Psalmist be our prayer today as well:  “Be our Shepherd, oh Lord; and cause your face to shine upon us in 2019!  In Jesus’ name, Amen!”
